We sat down with William Henry the creator behind Wallace the Brave, to get some insight into the inspiration that sparked his comic series. Henry explained that his love for comics came naturally. I’ve always enjoyed drawing and telling stories. People have also told me I have a good sense of humor. It just made sense to create comic strips.

Growing up in the 90s, when comic strips were a cultural staple, Henry noted that the medium had a significant impact on him. “The 90s were when comic strips were really influential. I grew up with them everywhere and they definitely left a lasting impression, he recalled. This foundation in both storytelling and humor led Henry to create Wallace the Brave, a comic that has become known for its relatable quirky characters and the lighthearted charm that resonates with readers.

When it comes to generating fresh ideas for Wallace the Brave, Henry admits he doesn’t have a set formula. I get asked about it all the time, and to be honest, I can’t give you a straightforward answer. It sounds odd considering I come up with new content every day, but I guess it all starts with simply observing what’s around me, he explained. For Henry, inspiration often strikes from the simplest moments and interactions in daily life. I admire many cartoonists and artists but the ones who have had the most impact on me are Richard Thompson (Cul de Sac), George Herriman (Krazy Kat), Jim Davis (Garfield), Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes), and Robert Crumb, he revealed. These renowned figures known for their unique styles and humorous storytelling have played a key role in shaping Henry’s creative process and the charm of Wallace the Brave.
