Tyler and Ryan the creative minds behind All I See Is Beans shared their approach to comic creation with us. When asked to describe their work in three words Tyler had this to say Chaotic. Stupid. Doctors. He elaborated, We don’t really stick to a theme like many webcomic artists. We just create whatever seems funny to us. Sure, some of our jokes are clever, but most of them are just ridiculousprobably the type that makes people want to punch us in the face. As for the Doctors’ part my wife is a medical doctor in residency and I’ve been with her since before she started med school. Her stories from school and work provide endless comic inspiration, which is why we feature so many doctor-related gags in our comics.

We asked Tyler and Ryan about their creative process and Tyler shared that he often struggles with coming up with new comic ideas. I’m not great at consistently brainstorming,he said. When I sit down to try, I usually hit a blank. But the best ideas come to me when I least expect them whether I’m on a walk, in the shower or driving across the state to a poker tournament. Sometimes a funny story my wife or a friend tells me about their day at work will inspire a comic idea.

We had the chance to dive deeper into the world of All I See Is Beans with Ryan, who shared how they approach character development to match the comic’s tone. If you look at our comics you’ll notice that some characters are more detailed wearing clothes while others are more simplistic often just basic shapes and sometimes yes they’re naked Ryan explained. The goal is to use these characters to deliver a punchline, particularly with our recurring doctor jokes. Instead of constantly inventing new characters we reuse the ones we have. The more they appear the more we get to reveal their individual quirks and personalities.
