When asked about the themes in his comics Colm shared For my shorter comics I often focus on subverting expectations and pushing the boundaries a little. Colm Lavery shared more about his approach, saying, My humor tends to come from subverting expectations. With four panels, I can quickly set something up for the reader and completely flip it in the final panel. But I donโt do it every time if I did, the twist would lose its impact, and readers would expect it. As for my Witch Beth comic itโs more of a fun lighthearted horror story with some dark humor mixed in. Itโs deeply inspired by the Discworld novels, which Iโm a huge fan of.

Colm Lavery gave us a peek into his background and how he got started in comics.
As you might have guessed from my work, I didnโt go to art school. Iโve always had a passion for art but Iโm largely self-taught. I did study art through GCSE and A-levels for anyone not familiar that’s the UK high school system. Unfortunately, there werenโt many art jobs available, so I ended up giving up on pursuing art as a career but it was always a hobby I kept up with.
Then one day, I started noticing more and more webcomics online like Randowis and Adamtots, and thought. This could be really fun, I saw it as an opportunity to practice my drawing, improve my skills and flex my comedy muscles at the same time. Ironically, though, growing up, I loved reading comics, but the thought of actually drawing them seemed exhausting to me. The idea of drawing the same characters over multiple panels felt draining and stressful. But now, here I am, drawing comics every week after work, already exhausted before I even begin lifeโs funny that way haha.

Colm Lavery gave us an inside look into his creative process behind the comics. Have you ever seen a cartoon character going about its day and suddenly have a lightbulb go off above its head during a eureka moment? Thatโs pretty much how it works for me except my lightbulb flickers like a sad broken fluorescent light in an old office complete with the buzzing sound.
The idea or joke usually just pops into my head unexpectedly especially when Iโm doing something that doesnโt require much focus like driving or listening to someone talk. Other times it happens when Iโm hanging out with friends, cracking a joke that falls flat. So my solution to that soul-crushing rejection is to draw it out and post it online so more people can tell me exactly why it didnโt land.
