When asked about the core theme of his comics Patrick was refreshingly candid. To be honest, I don’t really aim for a set theme. I actually try to avoid having one. Unlike many artists who focus on a consistent set of characters, topics, or styles, Patrick embraces variety. His comics act as a platform for experimentation across different styles and subjects. My comics can cover anything, he shares. From social commentary and pop culture to personal relationships and fantasy logic. They allow me to explore a wide range of ideas.
This diverse approach means that one comic might feature talking bunnies, while another shows highly realistic humans. Patrick embraces this fluidity because it keeps him engaged creatively. I get bored easily he admits. I’m afraid I’ll get tired of drawing the same thing over and over so I constantly mix it up. Some of Patrick’s comics tackle serious topics like the complexities of healthcare insurance while others dive into lighter subjects like meme culture. Patrick Cheng, the mind behind “CatTrigger” comics, understands that not every idea hits the mark. As part of the creative process some concepts simply don’t make it past the sketch phase. When asked if he’s ever had to scrap an idea, Patrick was quick to share that it happens more often than one might think. Plenty of times, he confessed. Sometimes it’s because of real-world events that change the tone or context of the comic.” He shared a particularly funny example. I once sketched out a parody comic where the villains kidnap the Queen of England in a James Bond-style scenario. But then, the Queen passed away shortly after I started the comic. The idea just wouldn’t have worked the same with King Charles no offense to him but his reign was just too new to make the joke land the way I had planned. This experience shows how the creative process is sometimes influenced by unexpected shifts in the world, and how Patrick’s keen sense of timing and relevance guides his work. It’s a reminder that sometimes you have to scrap an idea and move forward in the face of a rapidly changing world.
