Artist Shares Hilarious and Relatable Comics Based on Her Own Life Experiences (20 New Pics)

Mary Comics is a webcomic by Romanian artist Mary Nicola, who started posting her creations on Instagram in 2018. Her comics capture the little quirks and mishaps of daily life in a way that’s both personal and hilariously relatable. Whether it’s struggling through social situations stressing over what to wear or resisting the temptation to procrastinate Mary’s light-hearted humor shines through.

Each comic feels like a peek into a friend’s diary, filled with moments that make you say That’s totally me. Many of her stories feature Mary herself, adding a warm, authentic touch to the universal experiences she portrays. If you’ve ever found yourself in those awkward but funny moments of life her work will feel like a breath of fresh air.

We asked Mary about the challenges she faces as an artist, and she shared that time management is her biggest struggle. I work full-time as an illustrator at a publishing house, take on art commissions and hit the gym every day after work. It’s tough to balance everything, which is why I’ve been a bit inconsistent with posting comics, she explained. Despite the busy schedule, Mary mentioned that creating comics is still the most enjoyable part of her work. What I love most is drawing those exaggerated expressions they’re so much fun she said.

Mary’s comics reflect her personal life, so we asked how it feels to share these pieces of her journey with the world. I feel great because it’s amazing to see people relate to what I’ve been through. I’ve created comics about very specific experiences that I thought were unique to me, only to realize many others had gone through the same things. It’s a reminder that, while we’re all different we’re not so different after all she explained with a laugh.

At the same time, sharing more personal stories can be nerve-wracking. Sometimes it makes me anxious, especially when it’s something deeply personal, like my experience with bullying or my weight loss journey. But at the end of the day, it’s me and I want people to connect with the real me. I’m not perfect, I’ve faced challenges just like anyone else. Hopefully, as time goes on I’ll gain even more confidence to share more of my story.
