20 Ridiculous and Funny Comics from the ‘NJ Creepshow’ Series

My name is Brian Morrissey, and this is my comic series NJ Creepshow. As a kid in the ‘90s, Brian was obsessed with drawing, heavily influenced by Nickelodeon cartoons Marvel comics and Ninja Turtles. Eventually, he stopped copying Todd McFarlane’s style and found his own, which led him to create humorous homemade comics like Ninja Leprechaun and a Superman parody called Super Steve. However, around the age of 13 Brian put down his pencil and switched gears to focus on making videos and music.

After 20 years of no artistic output, I watched a video by artist Andy J. Pizza about finding your creative voice. That video helped me realize how much comics and cartoons were part of my creative DNA and how vital they were to my identity as a creator. Fortunately, this realization came in 2020 when I had a lot of free time on my hands. For the first time since childhood, I began drawing every day which eventually led me back to creating comics.

Coming up with comic ideas feels like freeform jazz in my brain there’s a lot of improvisation, and most of it turns out terrible. I typically start with a mundane topic or everyday situation and experiment with it until something makes me laugh. Sometimes, I’ll draw a silly character and wonder what they might say. At other times, I think about what I’d like to see when browsing for comics and art. If I can’t find anything that taps into that 90s horror nostalgia, I’ll just create it myself. There’s something so satisfying about saying I made that instead of wishing I had.

Since my work is usually pretty ridiculous, I love populating my comics with idiots and jerks who have no self-awareness. The funniest moments in life often come from failure and embarrassment, so I prefer creating characters who are the ones getting embarrassed rather than those pointing and laughing at others. I’m not interested in the typical high school quarterback who beats all the odds to win the game and get the girl. I’d rather focus on the dork in the marching band who ends up wetting his pants in front of the whole school.
