20 Comics Full of Silly Humor and Unexpected Twists by This Artist

Return of Stiqz is back with a dose of chaotic humor and absurdity. Created by Stiq Auteur this comic features colorful stick figures and is updated weekly on Instagram. Stiq describes the series as a dumb comic about morons being stupid. We got the chance to chat with the artist and asked them to sum up their work in three words. Their response. Mischief, mayhem, and merriment. As Stiq explains the idea is that the characters donโ€™t just deal with chaos they create and revel in it. Well, some of them anyway.

We asked the cartoonist about what inspired them to start creating comics, and here’s what they shared. Iโ€™ve been a huge fan of newspaper comics and comic books for as long as I can remember. However, the webcomic boom of the mid-2000s really caught my attention. It showed me that comics didnโ€™t have to be a big operation anyone with an idea and a website could create one. I started working on Return of Stiqz strips in 2007, but I never posted them because they were too niche half of my friends didnโ€™t even get the jokes. After college life got busy and I put it aside for a while but seeing how people were using social media to find audiences again inspired me to rework the comic and make it more accessible.

When we asked the artist where they find inspiration for new strips, they told us. I usually come up with a comic in one of two ways. First, I might start with a simple everyday situation and see if I can turn it into something wild and unexpected. Or, Iโ€™ll take a familiar phrase and try to twist its meaning without changing the words too much. I always jot down any ideas that come to mind because you never know when something that seems like a dead-end could turn into a great comic.

Stiq Auteur shared some of the key influences behind Return of Stiqz. The initial inspiration for the comic came from a mix of XKCD‘s simplicity and cleverness, paired with the expressiveness and MS Paint aesthetic of rage comics. Iโ€™ve also drawn quite a bit of inspiration from shows like SpongeBob and Tom & Jerry.
