Tom explained that the concept for Soup or Salad was born during the pandemic in 2020 a period when creativity had to adapt to the challenges of social distancing and isolation. I had initially wanted to make a short film but that required collaboration, which wasn’t possible at the time. So, I decided to focus on a creative project I could do on my own. Thatโ€™s when I came up with the idea for a comic. It took me several months to refine the art tone and some of the storylines before I was comfortable enough to release it.

The title Soup or Salad instantly brings to mind the classic restaurant choice soup or salad as an appetizer. Naturally, we were curious about the inspiration behind the name of Tomโ€™s comic series. Thereโ€™s really no special meaning behind the name Tom explained. It just sounded like something youโ€™d find in the Sunday Funnies. The name came long before the comic itself was fully fleshed out.

Tomโ€™s choice of characters is just as intriguing as the comic itself. While Ken, the man in the series fits a familiar character type Russell the boar is an unusual and unexpected choice not often seen in comics. Tom shared that heโ€™s an anxious person and has always connected with neurotic characters. โ€œI also find it funny when people are blunt or obnoxious in certain settings so I knew I wanted to create characters with those personality traits.

Visually, Tom didnโ€™t want to just feature two humans. Initially, the plan was to have an anxious guy living with an alligator as a roommate, but after seeing a similar pairing in another comic, he searched for a different animal to create in anthropomorphic form. Ultimately, he landed on a boar. Iโ€™ve been releasing it weekly for four years now, and within the comic it has yet to be addressed that one of the characters is a walking-talking boar Tom laughed.
