In an interview, the creators opened up about the new and unexpected themes in this year’s War And Peas collection that they hadn’t explored before.

We found ourselves fascinated by the concept of time this year they shared. Not in the grand existential we’re all moving toward entropy’ sense, but in the smaller ways time bends and stretches. For instance how a two-minute microwave countdown can feel like forever while a great conversation with a friend can fly by in an instant. Our comics played with these odd time shift pondering questions like. What if the universe’s best secrets are hidden in loading screens?

When reflecting on unique creative blocks or breakthroughs in 2024 that influenced their storytelling and illustration Jonathan and Elizabeth explained Oh there were definitely blocks. One June afternoon, we spent four hours staring at a blank sketchbook, convinced it was mocking us. The breakthrough didn’t come from some profound insight but when we realized the blank page wasn’t mocking us it was just blank. We came to understand that storytelling doesn’t always have to be clever or layered; sometimes, it’s enough for it to simply be. After that our approach softened like we’d allowed ourselves the freedom to let the stories find us rather than constantly searching for them.

War and Peas has a knack for mixing humor with poignant or satirical commentary. We asked the creators if there were any moments in 2024 where finding this balance was particularly challenging or rewarding. They responded Balancing humor and depth feels like juggling a flaming torch a rubber chicken and a live goldfish. Sometimes the goldfish ends up in the torch and we’re left questioning if humor and poignancy were ever meant to go hand in hand.
